The South African Astronomical Observatory in Observatory is running private night tours through August, taking small groups through the Main Building, the Visitor’s Centre and the McClean Museum before finishing with stargazing, weather permitting. It’s a low-key way to get behind the scenes at one of the country’s oldest working observatories, and the R50 entry fee is hard to argue with. Kids six and under go free.

Vehicles are only let onto the premises from 19:30, and there’s free parking on site.

Date and time: Tuesday, 11 August – Thursday, 27 August, 20:00 – 22:00
