Who is Cody?

Cody is our mascot, spirit animal, and AI-powered recommendation engine. He’s a penguin because, well, Cape Town has penguins. (Boulders Beach, anyone?) And like a penguin, Cody is resourceful, friendly, and surprisingly good at navigating tricky conditions.

But here’s the magic: Cody isn’t just a cute face. He’s backed by real knowledge from our Cape Town team. He knows which beaches are sheltered when the south-easter hits, where to find a R50 craft beer, and which hiking trails won’t leave you exhausted and lost.

How Cody Works

  • Tell Cody your mood (romantic, adventurous, lazy, hungry)
  • Tell him your budget (free, budget, splurge)
  • Tell him your group (solo, couple, family, friends)
  • Tell him if the weather matters (sunny, rainy, windy, cold)

He’ll give you a proper recommendation. Not a list of 47 options. An actual answer. A plan. Confidence.

Meet the Team

Behind Cody is a team of real Cape Town locals who eat, sleep, and breathe this city.

Cody

Cody

AI-Powered Local Expert

Part mascot, part recommendation engine, part local know-it-all. Cody helps visitors discover the best of Cape Town based on mood, budget, weather and who they’re travelling with. He never sleeps, never gets lost, and always knows where the nearest coffee shop is.

Mikhaila

Mikhaila

Founder & Editor

Born and raised in Cape Town. Has strong opinions about the best views, the worst traffic, and where to find the perfect thrift shop and bargain buy.

StJohn

StJohn

Adventure & Newsletter Editor

Has hiked Table Mountain more times than he can count. Knows which trails are beginner-friendly and which will break you. Pulls a mean espresso, cooks like a Michelin star chef and can out-dribble Messi & Ronaldo on a good day.

John

John

Ops Manager and Food & Wine Editor

Has visited every wine estate in Constantia, Stellenbosch, and Franschhoek. Multiple times. For “research.” Can be found nursing a brain-numbingly expensive single malt whiskey while reading Tolstoy and muttering about the ‘good-ol’ days.

Susan

Susan

Social Media & Recommendations Editor

Has an opinion on everything and is usually right. Knows which venues are genuinely worth your time, which ones are coasting on old reviews, and where to go when you need somewhere that actually delivers. Follows roughly 300 Cape Town Instagram accounts so you don’t have to.

Jeff

Jeff

Weather, Logistics & Events Editor

The person who actually checks the wind forecast before making weekend plans. A rare skill in Cape Town. Never seen without his surfboard, he’s a reclusive computer geek whose world-famous gaming skills are in suspiciously high demand at office parties.

Our Philosophy

Cape Town is not short of travel content. It is, however, short of useful travel content.

Most of what exists is either three years out of date, written by someone who visited once, or optimised for search engines rather than actual human beings trying to decide where to go for lunch. We started CapeTownCurrent because we live here, we know the difference, and the gap was getting embarrassing.

Cody is the practical version of that frustration. A recommendation engine that takes your mood, budget, group, and the actual weather into account and gives you an answer rather than a shortlist. The kind of answer a knowledgeable local would give you if you bumped into them and asked.

The rest of the site works the same way. No filler, no paid placements dressed up as editorial (well… actually we’ll mark it as such, as someone has to pay the bills), no recycled Top 10 lists though. We visit the venues we talk about, and we take into account the reviews that you all leave. You get accurate, current information about a city that rewards people who know where to look.
