What You’ll Find
Tucked away on Main Road in St James, Folk Cafe feels like a well-kept secret. The outdoor section, especially on a quiet, wet weekday night, becomes a cosy haven with blasting gas heaters to keep you snug. Or cosy up to the crackling fire inside that sets the mood for a magical experience. The decor strikes a balance between rustic charm and modern comfort, with warm lighting and wooden accents that invite you to linger. Whether you’re inside or out, the atmosphere is relaxed and unhurried – perfect for escaping the city’s buzz.
Food & Drinks
The coffee is consistently good, and we’ve never had a bad cup. Sunday morning coffee and almond croissants deliver ever single time, with friendly, smiling waiters always at your service. If you’re after something a little more filling, we highly recommend the eggs Benedict on a toasted croissant – perfection every time.
The menu here delivers comfort with flair. Their pizzas are a standout. Crispy, wood-fired, and packed with flavour, often drawing favourable comparisons to other local favourites. The fish and chips are a must-try, with a deep-fried, ultra-crispy batter and fries that are just as good. For something heartier, the pork belly is rich and flavourful, while the service keeps things warm and attentive.
Just note that food timing can be a bit off for larger groups, but the taste more than makes up for it.
Best For
- A rainy evening escape with friends by the outdoor fire
- Casual family dinners where pizza and chips steal the show
- Quiet, off-peak nights when you want the place almost to yourself
- Seafood lovers craving perfectly crispy fish and chips
Insider Tips
Visit on a weeknight and ask for a seat near the fire pit outside – it’s the cosiest spot in the house. If you’re a pizza fan, don’t skip the specials; they often rotate with fresh, local toppings.
If it’s a sunny day, check the padded seats as locals tend to sit down with wet bathing costumes and towels. We’ve been caught a couple of times, and it’s a little irritating. A minor issue, given the number of times we’ve enjoyed the hospitality.

What Customers Are Saying
“The food and service were excellent. The only small disappointment was the timing of how the food was brought from the kitchen to the table. When serving a small group of four adults and three children, the meals arrived in stages-first three plates, then two, and then one-which meant we had to wait”

“Nice food. Had the fish and chip which was deep fried very crispy. The fries was really good too. The pork belly is very flavorful.”

“Had the outdoor section to ourselves on a wet, quiet weekday night. Lovely atmosphere with a fire. Absolutely delicious pizzas (maybe even better than my precious Toad’s) and chips. And fantastic service! No complaints, will be back. On weekends this place is buzzing though and probably…”
